Overnight company: from the turndown service to the breakfast tray

Turndown done. Curtains drawn. Breakfast card on the door handle, ticked for two. Between those small hotel rituals sit ten hours, and this arrangement fills them: a companion who comes at dusk, is still there at first light and goes once breakfast is cleared, unhurried at both ends.

Ten hours cost £1,800. The booking is planned ahead and secured by transferring half in advance. The share of that half which covers her travel is not returned if plans fall through, because she gives up an entire evening and the following morning for one booking. The remainder is cash when she arrives or a transfer beforehand. The full ladder is on the rates board.

Why ten hours feels different

Short bookings have an ending in view from the first minute. An overnight does not. Dinner can be slow. A film can run to the credits. Conversation can pause for a while and pick up again an hour later. Guests who book one tend to report the same thing afterwards: the best part was never once checking the time.

A night, roughly timed

Every overnight bends to your diary, but most follow a similar outline. Move any of it later and the morning moves with it.

Desk tip
  • 21:00. She arrives, dressed for dinner downstairs or a quiet table in the room
  • 22:00. Food, a bottle, the day talked out of your system
  • Midnight. Lamps low, phones face down, the city gone quiet
  • 07:00. Breakfast, coffee, and she leaves as your day begins

Book it a day ahead

An overnight is rarely a same night decision for the companion, since it takes her whole evening and the morning after. Message a day or two in advance where possible, and earlier still for Fridays and Saturdays. Give the desk the hotel, the start time, whether dinner is out or in, and the hour your alarm is set for. She plans around that alarm, not the other way round.

Before a dawn flight

The airport overnight is a favourite. Take a Heathrow terminal hotel or a room at Gatwick the night before an early departure, and a dead evening becomes a good one. Her taxi out and back is priced into one total at the start. In the morning she leaves as you head for security, and a 05:00 alarm is a great deal easier to face.

Town rooms, same terms

Most overnights happen in central rooms: a West End hotel after a show, a suite high above the City of London on the last night of a work trip. Inside Zones 1 and 2 no fare is added. A serviced apartment or a private home works identically, with the address confirmed in place of a room number.

What to tell the desk about the morning

The end of an overnight matters as much as the start. Say what time checkout is, whether a car is collecting you, and whether breakfast should arrive in the room or wait downstairs. If you need an hour alone to pack and take calls, say that too, and the ten hours are arranged so she leaves before it begins. Guests who sleep lightly can mention it; she keeps the lamps and the phone quiet from the moment the lights go out.

Morning meetings are no reason to skip the booking. Start the ten hours at 21:00 and they finish at 07:00, which leaves time to shave, dress and walk into the day properly rested.

Who stays the night well

Milena rates the Sofitel at Heathrow Terminal 5 above any other airport address, and she is the one who books the wake-up call. Michelle, from Chelsea, looks after a tired traveller without being asked, from the glass of water to the alarm clock. Liana arrives with a French paperback and makes the night before a flight feel slow and calm. Patricia suits a night in: a novel picked out for you, an old black and white film, rain on the glass. Milena and Michelle are both on the curvaceous list.

Changing an overnight

Call it off at least 3 hours before the start and the deposit is returned, minus the travel share, which is kept. Pull out inside the final 2 hours and half of £1,800 is owed; an empty room owes all of it. Grace on the start time: a quarter of an hour. The booking steps apply as ever. Name the hotel and the date.

FAQ 04

Overnight company, asked

Straight answers, kept short. If yours is missing, the desk takes it in one message.

£1,800 for ten hours. Her travel costs nothing extra in Zones 1 and 2. Beyond them, the taxi both ways is added to one figure before you confirm.

Half the fee by bank transfer, sent once your name, hotel and room are confirmed. The travel part of that deposit cannot be refunded.

If you would like her to. Breakfast in the room or downstairs fits inside the ten hours. Tell the desk when you need to leave and she times the morning to it.

Yes. Start the ten hours at the table, and dinner, the evening and the morning are all covered by one booking.
