The City is small, roughly a square mile between the Tower of London and Temple, and medieval in its street plan even where the buildings are glass. Lanes and courts squeeze between the towers. High up in the towers, a handful of bars and restaurants hold the late crowd that has not gone home.

Stations and walking times

Bank, on the Central, Northern, and Waterloo and City lines plus the DLR, 1 minute from the heart of the City. St Paul's, Central line, 5 minutes. Liverpool Street, on the Central, Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines, the Elizabeth line and National Rail, 7 minutes.

For a guest, that means direct trains from the City to Heathrow on the Elizabeth line and to Gatwick on Thameslink. For a companion after dark it rarely matters: she comes by taxi, and at night the City's empty roads make that the quickest way in.

Arrival window: 40 to 60 minutes

No companion lives inside the Square Mile, so City bookings take a little longer than the West End. Most arrive within 40 to 60 minutes of confirmation. The clock starts once the checks are done: the usual WhatsApp confirmation of who you are, where you are staying and which room, followed by the 25 percent deposit by transfer.

Travel is included, the City being Zone 1, so the total you see is the rate. Pay the remainder in cash as she arrives, or by bank transfer, which shows under a discreet descriptor. Plans change? Cancel with at least 3 hours to spare and nothing is owed. Under 2 hours out, half the fee applies. A no-show owes all of it. There are 15 minutes of grace around the agreed time.

Bankers, lawyers and consultants in town for a week of meetings, staying close to the office and far from the nightlife. Conference delegates at the end of a long day of panels.
