Victoria, the airport train, a forward facing window seat and a paper bag of sushi for the ride. That is how Nancy begins a Gatwick booking, already smiling. She is 170 cm and curvy, golden blonde hair falling long past her shoulders, blue eyes bright enough to lift a grey afternoon. Her style is beach glamour translated for London: a camel trench, a gold necklace, a dress in a warm shade most people would not dare. Early thirties, living in Covent Garden, sunny as a default.
Easygoing does not mean unprepared. Nancy has done enough road trips to know that the best plans leave room for detours, and she brings that attitude to every evening. She swims most mornings, which explains the energy and the shoulders. Sushi is her standing order wherever she goes, and she has opinions on rice temperature that she will share whether asked or not. English is her language, cheerful and relaxed, and she makes strangers feel like old friends somewhere around the second drink.
The Gatwick Express takes her from Victoria to the airport in around half an hour, and she counts the ride as part of the evening. From the station it is a short walk or shuttle to either terminal hotel. She arrives with a light bag and a big appetite, suggests dinner in the hotel so nobody has to go back outside, and tells you about the best coastal road she has ever driven. Nancy's Gatwick evening is a holiday in miniature. She arrives, opens the curtains to watch the planes, and orders sushi or the nearest thing on the room service menu with a rating out of ten already forming. She wants to hear about your trip, the good parts first, and she swaps stories about roads she has driven, beaches she has swum from and one memorable flat tyre.
As the light goes, the pace slows. She kicks off her shoes, curls up at the end of the sofa and lets the conversation drift wherever it wants. Her laugh fills the room without ever filling the corridor. When the three hours end she heads for the last train with a wave, and somehow you feel as if you have spent a day at the seaside.

Cold water. I swim early, even in winter, and nothing afterwards feels difficult. Late flights are easy by comparison.
